To help you plan your liturgical celebrations this month I have compiled the feast days my family will be celebrating! In the image above I have included a suggested reading for you to read either before to prepare or on the day.

This is not a list of all the October feast days, but if you are looking to jump into celebrating the liturgical year one of these feast days would be a wonderful start!

October 4th St. Francis of Assisi
October 18th St. Luke’s Day
October 23rd St. James of Jerusalem Day
October 28th St. Simon and St. Jude's Day

Before each feast day I will do my best to share with you some quick tips, ideas, and recipes to bring joy and festivity into your domestic church.

The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

At the end of August we learned the news that we would be expecting our 3rd little one May of 2024. The days following were filled with dreaming and preparing our hearts.

On September 5th as I prepared for bed I realized I was miscarrying.

My grief upon knowing that we had lost our baby became woven with the Lord. In the midst of mourning, a deep desire grew to wanting to be fully known and held in these moments of loss. As I clung to Him and the peace of God, which supposes all understanding, guarded my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)

Through the gift of salvation in Christ Jesus one day I will be able to hold our sweet Michael Marie Wagner.

Here is a peak into one of my most treasured family traditions and an example of how liturgical living is more than celebrating the liturgical year, but is recognizing that the Lord is not only present on certain days, He is present in every moment…

This weekend we went out for our 7th year of apple picking! It is a tradition that has accompanied many moments that I hold dear.

🍎Andrew and I started this tradition to celebrate 6 months of dating. Two weeks later he proposed and then shortly after we were married!

🍎It is where we celebrated 6 months of Marriage. I even found my post from this: “These last 6 months have been filled with making a home, creating traditions, traveling to new places, weekend adventures, and most of all they have been filled with so much love.”

🍎The next year we announced our pregnancy with our first daughter.

And every year after it has become a time for us to mark a new season. To come together as a family and marvel at the beauty within a simple apple tree. To thank the Lord for another year of being a family.

The tradition does not end at the Orchard, but continues as we bake and preserve our apples to enjoy all winter long.

This tradition often reminds me of a quote by Edith Schaffer
“How precious a thing is the human family. Is it not worth some sacrifice in time, energy, safety, discomfort, and work?”

On August 24th, the church celebrates St. Bartholo

On August 24th, the church celebrates St. Bartholomew. St. Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael though it is not certain, was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus. He ventured far and wide, sharing the Gospel.

Depending on where you are located this day is associated with different harvests. In England it is associated with the harvest of Honey. In the warmer climates it is celebrated by harvesting watermelon as it is during the height of its growing time.

🍯Quick Feast Facts:
1. In history this day became known as St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, because in 1572 French Protestants were slaughtered during the wars of religion that took place on St. Bartholomew’s Eve in 1572.
2. St. Bartholomew has often been associated with a knifes since martyrs are often connected with the instruments of their martyrdom… I will leave the research up to you to find out how he was martyred. It is an example that even human creativity isn’t exempt from darkness.
3. It is only since the 9th Century that Nathanael and Bartholomew have been considered the same person.
4. “On the Spanish island of Majorca, children made lanterns out of the watermelons to parade through the village.” ~ @ashleytumlinwallace

🍯How We Are Celebrating:
We are celebrating quite simply this year with watermelon topped with salt and a drizzle of honey with our tea and honey. I will also read about him in our children’s bible. In the evening my husband and I will be reading John 1:43-51 while sipping on mead.

UPDATE READ THE DEFINITION OF RELATIONSHIP IN THE COMMENTS- before making assumptions about what I’m saying that I’m clearly not. As I have been embracing liturgical living I have also been repairing my relationship with Mary.

It may seem like an odd concept, but I realized quite quickly that I adopted an attitude that brushed her off in fear that I may worship her. Instead of viewing her as the Lord views her.

So today we are celebrating with the church around the world one of the oldest Marian feasts in the church.

The Feast today specifically celebrates her faithfulness in life and her Dormition.

There are many names for todays celebration…
1)The general name: Feast Of Saint Mary the Virgin Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
2)In the Orthodox Church: Dormition a Latin title that references the day on which she “fell asleep.”
3)In the Catholic Church: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

💐Quick Feast Facts:
1. Mary is often called Theotokos which means “God-bearer”
2. In the Orthodox Church they fast for 14 days starting on August 1st to prepare for this feast.
3. This feast was historically a time for the blessing of herbs. So each family would gather a bundle and bring it to church for the priest to bless.
4. There are many flowers associated with the Mary. Most commonly: Roses, Lilies, Myrtle, and Marigold.

💐How We Are Celebrating:
We will be having a late afternoon tea with Mary (our @friendsofthefaithco Mary doll) with rosemary lemon loaf as a fun way to remember the tradition of herbs. While I read poems from Malcolm Guite’s Sounding The Seasons.

This morning we read about the annunciation to help my 3 year old understand who Mary is.

Then later today we will be reading her Magnificat in Luke 1:46-55 as a family.

For myself I will be reading a passage from Julian of Norwich’s Revelations of Divine Love and A Responsory and Alleluia for the Blessed Virgin Mary by Hildegard of Bingen.

Harvest and preserve some of your own herbs, perhaps for making tea in times of sickness.
