Come this Sunday morning, we will gather around our dinning table with the glow of our Christmas tree illuminating the Advent wreath. And there we will behold the lighting of our first candle.🎄

I love Advent. I’ve loved it since childhood when I would sit in anticipation for the lighting of the candles. When it was time our priest would give the children a turn to light a candle and I would sit in silent wonder knowing this was a sacred moment.

Frederick Buchner explains this moment well: “In the silence of a midwinter dusk, there is a sound so faint that for all you can tell it may be only the sound of the silence itself. You hold your breath to listen. You are aware of the beating of your heart. The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens.
Advent is the name of that moment.”

As we continue this week to prepare for this coming Advent season, I pray that you too will experience this moment.

As my children are still so young this Remembrance

As my children are still so young this Remembrance Day, which also happens to be Martinmas, we read two books and the poem In Flanders Field by John McCrae.
“In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
    That mark our place; and in the sky
    The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
    Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
    The torch; be yours to hold it high.
    If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.”

The girls were captivated by the illustrations in Snow on Martinmas by @sleightholmfolk This also happens to be my personal favourite to read as it weaves Remembrance Day together with Martinmas, giving honour to both.
~ Lest We Forget ~

Today was for grace. For redeeming simple moments

Today was for grace. For redeeming simple moments of celebration in the midst of chaos. I had dreamed of baking, hymn singing and dressing up for All Saints. In reality it looked like quiet moments of prayer, story and music, tucked in with the noise of customer service calls, cleaning up dog pee, budgeting and intense braxton hicks.

Here is a little glimpse of our imperfectly beautiful celebrations…

Early this morning I began this All Saints with this prayer below from my cherished book of Evelyn Underhill’s Private Prayers.
“Into your hands, O Lord, we commend the souls of all the faithful departed, as into the hands of a faithful Creator and most loving Saviour, asking You to grant unto them forgiveness and peace.
Grant to us Lord, in our pilgrimage, the help of their prayers. Grant us the assurance of the Communion of Saints and the joy of their community, that they and we may be for ever one in You.
O Lord, grant us some part and fellowship with Your holy apostles, martyrs, saints and lovers: into whose company, not weighing our merits but pardoning our shortcomings, we ask You to admit us, through Christ our Lord.”

Then throughout the day I tucked these in…

Yesterday we had the sweetest picnic in our favour

Yesterday we had the sweetest picnic in our favourite spot and wanted share with you all that this winter we will be welcoming our newest little one! This pregnancy has been difficult with morning (all day) sickness and I would greatly appreciate your prayers for relief and endurance as I enter this second trimester. Despite the daily difficulties this pregnancy has also been filled with sweetness as the girls are very excited about the new baby and talk everyday to my belly ♥️

To help you plan your liturgical celebrations this month I have compiled the feast days my family will be celebrating! In the image above I have included a suggested reading for you to read either before to prepare or on the day.

This is not a list of all the May feast days, but if you are looking to jump into celebrating the liturgical year one of these feast days would be a wonderful start!

May 1st - Saint Phillip and Saint James
May 2nd - Saint Athanasius
May 9th - Ascension Day
May 19th - Pentecost
May 26th - Trinity Sunday
May 31st - The Visitation

Usually before each feast day I will do my best to share with you some quick tips, ideas, and recipes to bring joy and festivity into your domestic church. BUT for the next little while I need to give more attention to my family.
