There is one thing that I wish I did in our first years of marriage: prepare for motherhood. I wish I took the time to prepare my heart for motherhood by reading nourishing books. Once I became pregnant with Clara I dove into reading. I mainly read pregnancy books during that time to prepare myself for labour and postpartum, but did manage to dive into soul comforting motherhood books during my pregnancy and postpartum period. These 5 books pointed me back to the Lord time and time again. Through them I learned about God’s high calling for mothers.

1. Mission of Motherhood By Sally Clarkson

This is my all time favourite Christian motherhood book and I believe every Christian mom should read it! Since reading it, it has actually become my go to baby shower gift that I include for the mom. I like to pair it with my favourite baby sleeper and a bag of the mom to be’s favourite warm drink to create a nice little gift basket. Now back to the book: Sally Clarkson speaks to the heart of motherhood and what our role truly is in our children’s lives in this book. She has a way of being gentle yet strong in her approach to motherhood and I truly treasure her as one of my Titus 2 mentors.
“God’s design includes the presence of a hands-on gardener, a mother, to tend and cultivate their hearts, souls, minds, and relationships. As a garden cannot flourish without a gardener, neither can a child reach his or her potential without someone committed to careful cultivation. Just as a garden without a gardener will eventually go to seed and be covered over with weeds and debris, a child whose growth is unsupervised or left to chance will likely grow wild and undisciplined or stunted and unfruitful.” ~ Sally Clarkson, The Mission of Motherhood
Sally Clarkson is a renowned author, speaker, and co-founder of Whole Heart Ministries. Sally has authored over 20 books, including the best-selling “The Lifegiving Home,” “The Lifegiving Parent,” “Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe,” and “Own Your Life.” Her writing focuses on motherhood, parenting, home education, and Christian living.
Sally’s work has been featured in numerous publications, including Christianity Today, The Huffington Post, and Women’s Day. She is also a sought-after speaker and has been invited to speak at conferences and events around the world.

2.Memory Making Mom By Jessica Smartt
In one word this book is heartwarming. It is also a quick read! I read it in the rocking chair during Clara’s 4 month sleep regression with Clara in one arm and the book in the other. This book challenged me to think about: What memories do I want our children to have from their childhood? What traditions do I want to pass on? What is our family culture? How much time and energy do I want to put in? This book is filled to the brim with wonderful ideas for you to use for literally any event. Jessica Smartt truly thought of every moment that could be made into a precious family memory.
” I believe that five, ten, or twenty years later, the traditions you start now can be some of your family’s most treasured memories. I’m here to hold your hand as we dream about what this could look like for your family.” ~ Jessica Smartt, Memory Making Mom

3. The Power of Motherhood by Nancy Campbell
This book is not only a motherhood book, but it is also a work book. Each chapter has questions at the end to dig deeper into the topic that was being discussed. Nancy Campbell perfectly illustrates how the bible is our true manual to motherhood and it is in the scriptures that we find the answers to who we are and what are role is as mothers. Every chapter is rich with scripture and truth that every mother needs to hear!
“Mothering is too important to be accomplished part-time. Mothering is more than feeding and clothing our children. We have the responsibility to imprint God’s Word so lastingly on the hearts and minds of our children that they will automatically impart it to their children and their children’s children.” ~ Nancy Campbell, The Power of Motherhood
Nancy Campbell is an author, speaker, and mother of twelve children. She is best known for her book “The Power of Motherhood,” which has inspired and encouraged mothers around the world.
Born in New Zealand, Nancy grew up on a farm where she learned the importance of hard work and family. She later moved to America with her husband, Colin, and together they founded Above Rubies, a ministry that focuses on encouraging and supporting mothers in their God-given role.
Nancy’s passion is to see mothers empowered and equipped to fulfill their calling to raise up the next generation. She encourages women to embrace the joys and challenges of motherhood and to trust in God’s plan for their families.
4. Mama Bear Apologetics by Hillary Morgan Ferrer
This book is one that I needed to read slowly and then reread because I wanted to remember everything taught! This isn’t just a Christian motherhood book, but it truly is a christian parenting book that Dad will enjoy too! Mama Bear Apologetics is so important for every Christian mom to read because it discusses what the culture is teaching our kids today! Let me tell you there is a lot out there that I can not believe is being taught to children! Not only does this book uncover the lies the culture feeds our little ones, but it guides us, as mamas, on how to biblically combat these lies.
“Afraid apologetics isn’t your cup of tea? That’s totally fine. Don’t read this book for yourself. Read it for no other reason than you need to know what the world is telling your kids the eight-plus hours a day they are away from you. Read it so you can recognize the lies and help your little bears to recognize them too.” ~ Hillary Morgan Ferrer, Mama Bear Apologetics
Hillary Morgan Ferrer is an author, speaker, and founder of Mama Bear Apologetics a ministry that equips and encourages Christian mothers to defend their faith and raise their children to be confident in theirs. She holds a degree in biology and has over 15 years of experience in education and curriculum development.
Ferrer’s approach to apologetics is grounded in her belief that Christianity is not just a set of beliefs, but a way of life. She encourages mothers to model a Christ-like love and humility as they engage with people who hold different beliefs, and to teach their children to do the same. Her message is one of hope and empowerment, reminding mothers that they have the ability to shape the next generation of Christian leaders.
5. Learning Contentment by Nancy Wilson
This book challenged me. It made me have to: put it down, repent and ask for forgiveness, then continue reading. I believe we all struggle with discontent. This book brings to light where this sin is living in our lives. As mothers it is extremely important that we address this in our own lives as models for our children. Which is why I am so grateful that this book gives grace based action steps to overcome and change the way we as women view the world, our husbands, our homes, our clothes, etc.
“Contentment is only possible because Christ strengthens His people to be content. There is no other way. Contentment is not hardening yourself so you do not care what happens. It is not being stoic, nor is it bottling things up. Contentment is the result of spiritual strength that come directly from Christ.” ~ Nancy Wilson, Learning Contentment
Nancy Wilson is a Christian author and speaker who has written several books on the subjects of motherhood, homemaking, and biblical womanhood. She is best known for her book Learning Contentment, which has become a classic in Christian literature.
As a mother of three children, Wilson became passionate about the topics of motherhood and homemaking.
Wilson’s most well-known book, Learning Contentment: A Study for Ladies of Every Age, has been praised for its practical advice on how to find joy and peace in the midst of life’s challenges. In it, she explores the biblical concept of contentment and offers insights on how to cultivate a heart of gratitude and trust in God.
